The annual stress of the post-summer, back-to-school chaos puts parents, carers and household appliances through their paces. Uniforms need washing, PE kits need drying, fridges need filling and family routines suddenly have to run like clockwork again.
For Beko, that gave us the perfect opportunity to bring its reliability proposition to life – not through product specifications, but through a campaign built around the realities of modern family life.
THE CHALLENGE
Reliability is fundamental to Beko’s proposition, but it’s also something consumers expect from any home appliance. Speed’s challenge was to give that familiar message greater relevance and personality – creating a reason for families to engage with Beko at a time when having genuinely dependable appliances can make a huge difference to their day-to-day lives.
We needed an idea that could earn national media attention, generate relatable social content, and insert Beko naturally into conversations between parents.
THE IDEA
We built the campaign around one of the most hectic points in the family calendar: the return to school.
Research revealed that 82% of parents rely on WhatsApp groups as an essential tool for managing family life, giving us both a strong media story and the inspiration for our activation. So we decided to meet parents where they already were – on the WhatsApp group chat.
Enter the Beko Back-to-School WhatsApp Helpline.
Hosted by former teacher and Sunday Times bestselling author Lou Beckett, the helpline gave parents somewhere to share their Back-to-School dilemmas and get advice from someone well acquainted with the realities of family life.
Lou’s teaching background – along with her perspective as part of the Beckett household with Parenting Hell’s Rob Beckett – gave the campaign the combination of authority, warmth and humour it needed.
Rather than presenting the return to school as something parents should have perfectly under control, the campaign celebrated the reality: forgotten PE kit, frantic washing, packed-lunch prep and the countless jobs involved in getting a household back into its routine.
A programme of family creator partnerships extended that idea across social media, with relatable content bringing Beko appliances naturally into those everyday moments, and encouraging audiences to engage with the helpline.
